- Thursday, May 01, 2008

Sparta native Peter J. Cofrancesco III was elected to the American Quarter Horse Association’s (AQHA) Executive Committee during the organization’s recent convention held in San Francisco March 1-4.  As a member of the Executive Committee, Cofrancesco will serve with four other members in providing guidance, direction and decisions regarding the management of the AQHA, the world’s largest breed association with more than 375,000 members and one million horse owners.

The election of Cofrancesco to the Executive Committee is an historic one, as the 36 year old served as the association’s youth president in 1990 and is the first former youth president to be named to the Executive Committee. Furthermore, he is slated to become AQHA President in 2012 through ascension in the AQHA governance process. He will be the youngest President in the history of the nearly 75 year old association.

“I am truly honored,” said Cofrancesco in accepting the position. “The American Quarter Horse has been an integral part of my family’s life and to be able to serve this association in this capacity is unbelievable.”

The Cofrancesco family is a well known name in the Sparta area, owning several businesses in town, but their reputation in the equine industry is unsurpassed; with a AQHA record of 34 World Champions and numerous All American Quarter Horse Congress champions, they have put New Jersey on the map in the horse industry. Mr. Cofrancesco is also actively involved in the community, serving on the New Jersey Racing Commission, the Noble Community Bank Board of Directors, Newton Hospital Foundation Board, Sussex County Community College Foundation Board, and the Sussex County Farm & Horse Show Board of Directors. Peter’s mother, Peggy Cofrancesco, along with a host of other activities oversees the Peter J. Cofrancesco Memorial Quarter Horse Show that benefits the Sussex County Farm & Horse Show Foundation, a reserve fund for capital improvements at the fairgrounds. The foundation was set up by former New Jersey State Fair/ Sussex County Farm & Horse Show President the late Peter J. Cofrancesco Jr.

“I am humbled and excited to be named to this group at such a young age, I have admired the many people that have come before me and served, and have looked upon them with great admiration. This would not have been possible without the love and encouragement of my parents.” Cofrancesco said. Peter is married to his wife Carmen, and they have three  children, Ireland, Peter IV, & Emma, All of whom live in Sparta and enjoy riding horses. They are the epitome of what the American Quarter Horse Association family represents.
